Hi Bill,
Thanks for the help. I play tenor banjo in a very traditional style, and my repertoire is, almost without exception, popular tunes from the 1890s - early 1930s. I perform publicly only a handful of times a year, and do so as a soloist. Although I'd very much like to play in a tradtional combo, I don't know of any others in my area (Bedford, PA) that are musically like-minded.
I'm a long-time 78 rpm collector, and my collection covers the jazz and and popular music of the same period. And although I enjoy all pre-swing era jazz, I am especially fond of the jazz of the early jazz '20s.
I use Rust's Jazz and Dance Band discographies regularly, along with the Jepsen books for later recodings. Does the The Complete Encyclopedia of Popular Music and Jazz. 1900-1950 list commercial recordings for each song?
Does the Larkin set list recordings for each song title? I think you mentioned that the the Lord set is arranged by song title, but I'd be interested in the dance band and vocal recordings (distinguished from records with simply a vocal chorus) for each song as well.
Thanks in advance!
Mike

Dear Mike,
Welcome to the list.
We are a friendly and knowledgeable lot, but like the 'family' we are
have occasional differences when it comes to what we term OKOM (Our
Kind Of Music).
As you can imagine, this varies from person to person.
Regarding your specific query, all I can say is "If only!"
It would be a lifetime project, even though much of the information is
available. Collating it all is the major problem.
Books like the 4-volume 'The Complete Encyclopedia of Popular Music and
Jazz. 1900-1950' was a good start, but is now out of print.
There are others, all far from complete.
Tom Lord's 'The Jazz Discography' provides the information on a CD-ROM,
but you need to search for a specific tune before you can find the
bands that have recorded it. Not all dance bands are listed, nor are
the blues singers.
It is why jazz collector/researchers like me have a large library of
discographies and books.

Perhaps you would like to tell us about yourself.
Kind regards,
Bill.
