Larry,

I see reading and improvising as distinct skills rather than the
extremes of a spectrum. They are not mutually exclusive. Some of the
best musicians I know excel at both.

It is possible to develop either skill through practice. For both, the
practice needs to be real-time and linear as opposed to a drill-and-kill
approach one might use to overcome technical problems.
