I also heard that Basie rejected many arrangements, or modified them, if
they were too complicated. I remember an interview where Basie said he'd
visually pick someone out of the audience who wasn't too receptive and play
specifically for him/her until they were tapping their feet. Music for the
listeners, not for the musicians. What a concept.
