I've just come back from the Isradixie Band's concert. What a treat!
The band seemed to have all new arrangements (perhaps head); even such
a warhorse as Jada got a new treatment! Avraham Felder "Agashkin" (an
important nickname when publicizing his band to Russian speaking
public), the leader, trumpet and flugelhorn played the usual Armstron
intro to the West End Blues - with a difference; it was recognizable -
but sounded fresh. He also started extemporizing right away on
Midnight in Moscow (although later, as the great majority of the
audience was Russian speaking, he played it straight for them to sing
along). Jacques Sany on soprano sax and Merton Cahm on carinet and
(mainly) tenor sax were their usual selves. There were lots of tuba
solos and tuba-banjo duets. I admire the tuba player - he was
standing and even dancing with it throughout the concert, and the
beast looked rather heavy. i must admit that I liked the unamplified
Tin Roof Blues best (well, the rhythm section remained amplified,
which create a weird effect, but the front line showed amplification
to be superfluous).
