Actually it didn't disappear and won't be gone until it's overwritten by 
something else.  When you delete a file you only erase the file from the 
directory of the hard drive that's located in the first few sectors of the 
HD.  When you move a file it doesn't actually move only the reference to 
where it is located changes.  It's just like a table of contents in a book. 
You could cut out the reference to a chapter in the table of contents but it 
would still physically be there.

Computers being really stupid can't find things that have been erased in 
this manner.  But if you have the right tools those things can be recovered. 
Police forensic computer people have such programs.  Pity the poor pedophile 
who thinks he has erased the pics of the kids only to find out they are 
still there and can be found. That's how they catch a lot of these guys. 
The only sure way to destroy a file is to make sure it is overwritten.  Some 
virus programs have been adapted to do just that and are used by people who 
don't want their files to get into the wrong hands.

There is hope.  If somehow they were deleted look in the recycle bin.  If 
you haven't emptied the bin lately they will be sitting in there and can be 
restored to their original place.  Your hard drive won't show any more space 
until the recycle bin has been dumped so they may be sitting there waiting 
for you.
