Hannibal, the owner of the restaurant/bar in Modesto, thinks they found out about him because of an online newspaper called Modesto View, it's also available in print. Every week they would be raving about the live music at Barkin' Dog Grill and how it is THE place to go to hear jazz in Modesto.

I knew a girl who worked for BMI or ASCAP or one of those - she would go to
a bar, unannounced, sit down, order a beer, and talk to the bartender. She'd
ask, "How many people do y'all get in here on a weekend?" Of course, the guy
would double his real head count. Then she'd ask about the music the bands
play, she'd ask, "Do they play such-and-such", of course the guy would say,
"Yeah, that's one of their best tunes", even if he'd never heard of it
before. Then she'd tell them who she was and hit them with having to buy a
license, based on the (inflated by them) head count, and because all the
songs she asked about were licensed by her organization.

Actually, we haven't done it yet. It's scheduled for April 22, from 1pm to
7 pm

sure it didn't take long to raise the amount of the
fine.
