Considering the inflation rate  between when you bought that $99 
turntable, and that one still sells at$99 means that inflation has not 
caught up with the  product or else it would be a lot more than that. If 
in doubt price a car of  that earlier vintage and what a new one costs 
today.
That you can still geta turntable may be the miracle. Little wonder the 
odd look when requesting a phono needle.
