ARIZONA CLASSIC JAZZ FESTIVAL
November 9 – 12, 2006
The Festival actually begins with “A Four Barrel – Twin Piano Jazz Shoot
Out at the Steinway Corral,” 14418 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, on
Wednesday, November 8, at 7:30 p.m. Nationally recognized musicians Jeff Barnhart
and John Cocuzzi will represent the traditional jazz and swing genre while the
young, talented, local musicians Andy Margolis and Jacob Koller will present
a more modern selection of music. The two revolving sets on twin Steinway
Grands will conclude with an eight “hands-on” finale that will never be
forgotten. $10 entrance fee. Proceeds go to benefit the Arizona Classic Jazz
Society’s Bev Moyer Education/Scholarship Fund.
All Festival events from Thursday, November 9 – Sunday, November 12, take
place at the Crowne Plaza San Marcos, One San Marcos Place, Chandler.
Featured Festival jazz bands are Blue Street, Buck Creek, Cornet Chop Suey, 52nd
Street, High Sierra, Independence Hall, Mighty Aphrodite, Pieter Meijers
Quartet featuring Ms. Ruby Wilson, Royal Dixie, Titan Hot Seven and Uptown
Lowdown. Vibraphonist John Cocuzzi will perform with High Sierra and Titan Hot
Seven and with Jeff Barnhart in three twin piano sets. A change of pace is
offered by Ivory & Gold (piano, flute, drums) and JAS’M (piano, guitar, drums,
vocalist). The Lindy Hoppers are sponsoring La Chat Lunatique for midnight
performances on Friday and Saturday and will also provide Charleston dance
lessons on those days. The two jammer sets are being organized by Cheryl Lewis
and Gary Church. Igor & Friends will do some sidewalk strolling along San
Marcos Place. Mayor Boyd Dunn will present the “Gentleman of Jazz” award to
Joe Hopkins at the Friday evening Showcase of Bands during which time each
band plays one song.
Cost: All Events $80; Thursday $10; Friday $35: Saturday $35; Sunday $25.
Badge Registration is in the entrance to the San Marcos Ballroom just east of
hotel registration. Four venues will be playing at the same time. Live
entertainment Thursday 6 – 9:30 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m. – 1 a.m., Saturday 10 a.m. –
1 a.m.; Sunday 9:45 a.m. – 5 p.m. Gospel hour at 9:45 a.m. Sunday does not
require an admittance fee and there is a free patio venue at select times
Friday – Sunday.
