I have seen and played the ysl 697z in a shop locally. I didn't like it compared to my 653 and my new 691.
The "Z" is Yamaha's shot at the "small jazz horn" craze going around imo. It is very light weight and meant to
compare with the small King 2B series. Smaller bell, bore, etc. The one i played had a terrible slide.
I really like my new 691 which is the later version of the 653. My only reservation on the 691 is the interchangeable lead pipes (mouthpipes). i have to own it longer to get a handle on that. The funny part of it, imo, is everyone seems to have a different "story" about which pipe is the more "open", or "closed", etc. etc. LOL. One pro I know of said the #3 was "in between" #1 and #2 in size. That doesn't make a lot of sense, but then- Who Knows?
