Jazz Festival: Some of the best featured at free concerts

by John Pitcher Staff music critic

(June 4, 2006) ‹ Apparently the old saying "you get what you pay for"
doesn't apply to the Rochester International Jazz Festival. This year, the
festival (June 9-17) will present a new Museum and Gallery Family Series
featuring only acts of the highest quality, and every one of those
performances will be free.

Moreover, the festival has arranged for the first time in its five-year
history to turn Gibbs Street into "Jazz Street" for the entire duration of
the festival, presenting on its outdoor stages everything from local high
school jazz bands to acts of international caliber such as Little Feat (June
10) and Dickey Betts (June 17).

"The whole idea is to create a vibe, to create a daily event that will
electrify people and make them feel different from the way they feel the
rest of the year," says John Nugent, the festival founding producer and
artistic director. "We want this to have a sort of outdoor New Orleans
festival feel."

Lending credibility to that New Orleans feel will be the Mary Jemison
Riverboat, which will ply the Genesee River and launch its free cruises from
Corn Hill Landing on June 15-17 from 3-5 p.m. The double-decker boat, which
can accommodate between 50 and 80 people depending on the weather, will
serve as a floating platform for the Smugtown Stompers Dixieland Band, which
performs vintage pre-1930s Dixieland jazz.

The Museum and Gallery Family Series will offer 4 p.m. concerts at two
venues: Memorial Art Gallery, 500 University Ave.; and George Eastman House,
900 East Ave.

Memorial Art Gallery concerts will include the Greater Rochester Jazz
Orchestra (June 9), a group of talented local musicians who play in the
spirit of Count Basie; and Jazzmatazz (June 10) and the Hayes Greenfield
Trio (June 11), both of which feature the music of saxophonist and
band-leader Hayes Greenfield.

George Eastman House shows will feature artists familiar to Rochester
International Jazz Festival regulars. The Hoffman & Sneider Duo (June 12)
will showcase the talents of two fixtures of the local jazz scene: pianist
Paul Hoffman and guitarist Bob Sneider. In fact, Sneider will likely be the
busiest musician at the jazz fest, since he'll be performing at free nightly
jam sessions from 10:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. at the State St. Bar & Grill at
the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Pianist Jon Ballantyne (June 13) will bring both his fleet fingers (the guy
is a blistering virtuoso) and his trio for a concert at Eastman House. A
Canadian-born musician, Ballantyne is fast becoming a Rochester fixture
himself since he is returning for his third festival.

Another noted jazz pianist, Harold Danko (June 14), will appear at Eastman
House. Danko chairs the Eastman School of Music's jazz department, so expect
him to show up at the concert with some of his conservatory colleagues.
