DJMLers--
For those interested in the history and role of the tuba in
dixieland, i just learned that someone wrote a doctoral dissertation
on the topic. I sent an email to the poster (on the Tuba-Euphnium
mailing-list), found the name of the author, and ordered the
dissertation. Here's the info:

"The role of the tuba in early jazz music from 1917 to the present: A
historical, pedagogical, and aural perspective" by Bough, Thomas Wayne
($41.00) DMA. ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY, 1998. 123 pp.
Advisor: Pilafian, J. Samuel

First i did a Google-search on 'dissertations', and one of the
hits was http://wwwlib.umi.com/dxweb/neworder. I then searched on
Bough, Thomas and found the dissertation. This website seems aimed
(exclusively perhaps) at students, faculty, or staff connected with
colleges and universities, but i'm retired from the University of
Texas, so it worked for me.
Dr. Bough now teaches at Northern Illinois University. See more
info about him at:
http://www3.niu.edu/band/bough.htm
I'll let y'all know what kind of info i find in it.

      Dan

P. S. My dissertation's available too, for all you music-theory geeks.
