[Dixielandjazz] Microphones

I've noticed no one has ever asked this question about mikes, which is, is
there a mike that can be placed about 4 - 6 feet in front of a band that will
pick up the sound?  Or do all mikes require the singer or horn to be about 1/4
from the mike head?
