Hi guys:
Bob: your reasoning is of course sound business, as we know and
understand it, however the Monkey project just proved what can happen
by thinking outside the box. Especially with the younger music buyers,
we have all raised teenagers or are raising them and know that they are
simply not NORMAL for a few years, Hell some of them Never turnout
Normal, (whatever that is) every time I figured out what was normal
they changed the definition again. :)) There was even a albeit
(short ) time when I thought I was Normal. But it didn't affect me!
affect me! affect me! affect me! affect me! excuse me, the damned
needle stuck on my CD player. :))
That is exactly what is happening with many rock and folk acts and even
some Jazz and Smooth Jazz acts, they are posting songs for free
downloads on their sites, with links to the sales page to buy other
full length CDs.
It has been working well for many of them, Also many of them are into
the buy one song at a time digital download, and now cell phone ring
tones are becoming a viable marketing tool for bands.
Hence my hesitant answer to Don Mopsick about did I think I could
repeat my former good luck and success in record sales in today's
market. I just don't know because there are so many new marketing
techniques being put into place daily for the young folks market
anyway. I think however that many of us older folks and baby boomers
are still willing to embrace the old methods because we are not all up
to snuff on the new internet operations YET??
I am definitely looking into everything that I can find for ways to do
just that, because I am involved with a new product that has "Current
Hit" all over it with two former American Idol contestants. It is
definitely a challenge for me to try and market it to an entirely
foreign and ever changing market for me at my age. And it is NOT
"MKOM", I know they have a waiting audience, it is up to me to get the
product to them and get them to pay for it. Or sell or license it to
another bigger label. It should be a very successful venture, the
production budget was very reasonable, but one never knows in this
business, you win some and you lose some.
Nancy's post about the Monkey project is giving me ideas, since both
artists gained a lot of International recognition from that Television
exposure week after week, and many folks think they both actually
should have won. We have produced some very powerful music with them,
( much better than anything they were allowed to sing on American Idol
).
Cheers,
Tom "Scratching my head" Wiggins

Regarding Nancy's post, a rock band that gave CDs to their fans &
told them to share them using digital file sharing programs on the
Internet.
If I were trying to sell CDs, I certainly would not give them away.
However, it did get me to thinking.
If I were in a music field with mass appeal such as Rock, it might be
an idea to do exactly what that band did, only have one song on the CD
that they are giving away.
If the fans liked the band & were given one free song, I'll bet they
would be buying the others like crazy. Sounds like an interesting
promotion idea to me.
Kinda like making samples available on your web site.
