Just thought these posts from another list in San Francisco might be
interesting to some on the DJML.
We have hinted at the same problem a time or two on the DJML :))

Music Teachers with No Gigs and No Band - Hypocrisy?
ORIGINAL MSG: Um...there are teachers advertising their services on
here, saying things like "Take lessons with me, and get the gig!" Yet,
I know for a fact, that some of these teachers have no band, and have
no gigs. In fact, some of these teachers are trying to get the same
gigs I am, or auditioning for the same bands I am.
Does that make them hypocrites? On one hand to say that taking
lessons with them will help me get the gig, and yet...they have no
steady stream of good gigs of their own?
Good Christ, the music scene here sucks.

Previous message:
If you're looking for a music teacher, ask them where you can come
hear them peform. Ask them what recordings you can hear them on. Ask
them why they chose to teach music as a profession, as opposed to
perform music. Chances are, they will NOT be able to give you an
answer.
Why?
Because they either have NO gigs or are auditioning for the same gigs
you are (as the original poster stated). Now do you really want to
"learn" from this kind of "teacher"?
A music degree doesn't make someone a GOOD teacher, performer or
musician. Just like passing the bar exam doesn't necessarily make you a
good lawyer.
"Those who can't, teach."
I'm so thankful that I didn't have teachers in this category. When I
was in college, all my teachers were teaching during the day, and
gigging almost every night. Plus they were some of the best in the San
Francisco, Bay Area. Both live and in the studio.
