CAMELLIA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PRESENTS A JAZZY
EVENING OF CLASSICAL MUSIC
Sacramento, CA-In its 43rd Season, the Camellia Symphony
Orchestra will perform a concert infused with jazz entitled Classical Meets
Jazz at the Memorial Auditorium on Saturday, February 4, 2006, at 8:00 p.m.
Prior to the concert there will be a "Youth Jazz Session" featuring
jazz performances by ensembles from American River College, Rio Americano
High School and Folsom Middle School. Admission to the jazz sessions will be
free with the purchase of a ticket and begins at 6:30 p.m.
The concert itself has several unique elements including a Sacramento
premiere of music director and conductor, Allan Pollack's composition Albion
Song with Jazz Saxophone Solo. For this piece, Maestro Pollack will hand the
baton over to guest conductor Paul Simmons while he performs the saxophone
solo. Dr. Pollack wrote "Albion Song," a jazz concerto, in the town of
Albion, California located on the Mendocino County coast over a two-year
period. "It was inspired by the peacefulness of that beautiful place, where
one is protected from the madness of unbridled human interaction. There, the
magnificent landscapes and the capricious wild weather inspire an honesty
that is particularly conducive to creativity," says Allan Pollack.
Another highlight includes a performance by local blues and jazz
singer, Gayiel Von. Ms. Von will perform a Duke Ellington medley entitled 3
by the Duke, When I Fall in Love and The Man that Got Away.
Concert Program:
Bernstein-Symphonic Dances from West Side Story
Rodgers-Slaughter on Tenth Ave.
