Dear Graham,
As Anton hit on earlier today, confirmed by your CD information and the
sound clip you provided to me off-list, the version of "I'm Looking Over A
Four Leaf Clover" on your 'Double Play' CD is indeed the Jean Goldkette
Victor record from 28 Jan 1927 with vclist Billy Murray.
And it is certainly Bix playing prominently in the last chorus.
The reason that you could hear a Whiteman feel to the record is that Pops
used many of the Goldkette musicians in his orchestra in the 1920s
Billy Murray (1877-1954) was born in Philadelphia to Irish immigrant
parents. He was a very popular vaudeville and recording artist from the
early 1900s and one of the first true recording stars.
He did not work with Paul Whiteman or Jean Goldkette, but recorded with both
of them.
My file search for a Formby/Whiteman connection drew a blank, which is not
to say that you are wrong in your recollection.
Formby did not perform in the US, but did make 'personal appearances' there.
Whatever that may mean.
Boy! Did Dave Richoux's listener start something!
Kind regards,
Bill.
