I vote with Bob Smith. Although dictionaries list as "origin unknown" for "gig" -- short job especially by entertainers-- It seemed most logical to me that this was derived from the French word "gigue" meaning --short quick dance. Norman-- I'm no word maven, but this seems logical to me--Vickers
