Hi
I met and heard Jacque Gauthe play at the Jazz Preservation Hall in Feb 2004. I instantly
recognized he was a Bechet disciple. At intermission I asked him about this only to be informed, "Sidney
Bechet was my teacher. He gave me lessons in France at his house when I was 15". Holy ^%$. Not only do I hear Bechet-like licks ' live' for the first time in my life, I also hear real life anecdotes about my favourite musician Sidney from Jacque.
Hearing real life anecdotes about someone you revere that died almost 50 years ago is magical to say the least.
After the intermission, after speaking with him he really began to sound Bechet-like. Interesting we both
agreed the 1932 'Maple Leaf Rag' with the New Orleans's Footwarmers was 'one' of Bechet's masterpieces.
Jacque is a wonderfully gifted musician but also a real nice guy. I've been wondering about him ever since
Katrina hit. Any news on his whereabouts ? Is he still living in Texas ? I hope he's still generating music somewhere, someplace !!
