[Dixielandjazz] Unusual Gigs

We were playing in a rather small wedding chapel/hall. We were well into
the second set when a very low sound, a lot like an earthquake or thunder
very far off, started pulsating around the building. The sound grew louder
and louder with the sound sort of phasing in and out and circling the
building. The sound got so loud that we were having trouble playing over
it. The sound finally completely went away. We took a break and went
downstairs to the bar and food. In the basement of the place were about a
hundred bikers and their girl friends, none of whom were exactly dressed for
a wedding reception. They were eating and drinking everything in sight. We
went upstairs for our third set and started playing. After about 10 minutes
a few of the "guests" wandered upstairs and started to dance. The bride's
father came up to one couple and asked them to leave and said he didn't mind
them eating and drinking but he just wanted them to go downstairs. The
groom told the Bride's father that they were his friends and had no business
telling them to leave and he proceeded to cold cock the brides father. He
laid the man out in the middle of the dance floor.
Another wedding we played was unusual in that the groom was exceptionally
handsome and the bride was South of ugly. Everything went well until the
bride and groom exchanged bites of wedding cake. The groom forced the bride
backwards over the table and shoved the slice of cake in her face. We
didn't think that couple had a great future together.
Another was an exercise in race relations. The groom and his family were
pretty obviously low class red necks. The bride who was Oriental / Black
and extremely pregnant had her family and friends who were of every race and
mixture you might think of along with a few obvious cross dressers. You
could cut the tension with a knife. On the bright side they all universally
hated the band.
We were doing a wedding reception at a very nice country club. The
reception was next to the pool and we were set up about 10 ft from the pool.
After the photos, dinner and first dances the bridesmaids and groomsmen
proceeded to throw the bride and groom into the pool followed by the parents
and then they all ended up in the pool with several of the guests. I got a
little uneasy when they started looking at the band.
And yes we got paid for all of them.
