OK I was a bit slow myself ;-)
If you are producing fairly low volume stuff where you would use
a stick on label, but don't like the labels, then this sort of
printer is the answer.
I don't think Canon are the only manufacturers, but an example of
one of theirs can be seen here :-

They don't advertise the feature greatly, but there is mention of
direct DVD/CD printing. The way it works is that there is a tray
in the printer the takes a CD and pulls it in just like a piece
of paper (without bending it or course). It is then printed on
using the inks just the same as paper.
You need special CDs that have a white surface designed for printing
or you can just stick a label on to an ordinary CD. The special
one are of course better.
The software that comes with the printer has a label designing
feature to make the whole process easier.
