Lots of Jazz Action in NYC. In addition to the usual OKOM, eg. Eddie Davis &
Wpody Allen, The Nighthawks, Cajun, Birdland, Gotham Jazz Men, Grove Street
Stompers, Ed Polcer, Dan Levinson, Jon Erik Kelso, Smith Street & many
others performing around the place I note the following "GOOD NEWS" for
JAZZ. Some OKOM, some not, but it indicates the upward trend which IMO
started several years ago with the Ken Burns PBS series.

Sep 22- Manhattan School of Music Jazz Band. music of Fats Waller, Bix
Beiderbecke as well as Mingus, Brookmeyer, Nelson and Rugulo. Then October
and November programs feature music of Miles, John Lewis and other moderns.

Sep 24 - Juilliard Jazz Orchestra w/Saxophonist Bobby Watson featuring
Kansas City Boogie Woogie.

Oct 10 - Juilliard Jazz Orchestra featuring the Music of Duke Ellington.

September 6 through Oct 2. "Women in Jazz Festival" Club Coca Cola Lincoln
Center. Marian McPartland, and a host of great jazzwomen.

September - Jazz Gallery is thriving again

September - Village Vanguard is thriving again.

September 22 to 24: Kansas City Jump, Count Basie et al with Bobby Watson's
Jump Band. Allen Room, Lincoln Center.

Other 2005 events include music of Coltrane, Monk, Parker, Jarrett, et al at
various NYC locations.

A preview of 2006:

Jan - LEGENDS OF JAZZ - A 13 WEEK PBS TV SERIES HOSTED BY RAMSEY LEWIS.
(this one is sure to spark the usual nit picking from pseudo jazz literati)

Mar - GREAT AMERICAN SONGWRITERS - Pianist Bill Charlap and the Vernon Duke
songbook. (Autumn in NY, April in Paris et al) Allen Room, Lincoln Center

May - CONGO SQUARE - Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra examines the historical
approach to the positive music with a performance of work by Jelly Roll
Morton, Sam Morgan et al. Rose Hall Lincoln Center.

ALL IN ADDITION TO THE USUAL BROAD OFFERING OF JAZZ IN NYC. No doubt there
will be some Preservation Hall stuff going on also.

Carpe Diem.

Cheers,
Steve
