[Dixielandjazz] Pronunciation of "Biloxi"

I'm sure that someone(s) on this list can give me an accurate and
knowledgeable answer to this minor puzzlement:

On the news on TV, I've heard reporters time and again pronounce the name
of the city in Mississippi as bill LUX see, and I always thought it was
pronounced bill LOX see. Which is correct?

I'm aware of the existence of local pronunciation variations, having grown
up in New York where the street in Greenwich Village is HOW ston, not HEW
ston. :-)
