I too favor tuning my drum heads by ear, even had a drum key surgically
implanted in my earlobe so I never have to miss a beat while tuning on
the fly :)) I usually tune while doing my version of Mule Train and
licking my eyebrows, :))
Yeah it's a comedy show sometimes. :))

drums/washboard/swineharp player ( don't find too many guys playing
the swine harp anymore.

When watching the meter, if flat, we tightened our lip and if sharp we
loosened our lip. So when tuning to the meters, whether tuning slides or
barrels were in or out, we would put the pitch on the correct meter
needle
or l.e.d. reading. Worked better for us to tune by ear to the guitar.
