The word "obbligato" comes from the Latin word "obligare" meaning "to
oblige."  In music, it is an ornamental instrumental accompaniment that
is an integral part of the musical fabric.  Compare to the term "ad lib"
which means a part is optional or may be replaced by improvised
material.
