Hi Laurence,
All I can tell you that is was written in 1947 by Turk Murphy's banjo
player/ vocalist Clancy Hayes, who seems to be highly regarded by many on
this list as a good jazz band singer.

> I gave my heart, and I believed

> But lovers' promises may be
> Wishful thinking fantasy

> Chorus:
>
> Broken promises mean broken hearts
> Broken words, that's how each teardrop starts
> Promises that never could come true
> I believed them -- what else was I to do?
> Vows we made, you took them all in vain
> Love to you was just a passing game
> When you promised me we'd never part
> You broke your promise and my heart.
