Dear David,
Thank you for the additional information.
It is interesting that Don Raye's lyrics for "Struttin' With Some Barbecue"
go back to 1941.
The 9 Dec 1927 Okeh record by Louis Armstrong's Hot Five gives credit to
'Hardin' only.
Apparently, the published sheet music from this time shows both Louis and
Lil Armstrong as composers.
Elsewhere, Lil Armstrong has claimed that she and Louis wrote the tune
during their King Oliver days, and that much later Joe Glaser tried to cheat
her out of the royalties. Lil won.
Louis claimed (Esquire magazine. 1951) that he got the idea for the tune
while at a barbecue joint at 48th and State, Chicago with Zutty Singleton
while they were playing at the Savoy Ballroom. However, Louis did not play
at the then new Savoy Ballroom (with Carroll Dickerson) until about April
1928. Maybe Louis meant 'The Sunset Cafe'.
The 12 Jan 1938 Decca recording of "Struttin" [the one with the Albert
Nicholas off-key clt solo] gives simply 'Armstrong' as the composer credit.

Incidentally, Raye-Alexander are co-composers of the Louis Armstrong Decca
recording (1 May 1940) of "Cut Off My Legs And Call Me Shorty".
Could this be Don Raye? And who is Alexander?
Kind regards,
Bill.
