Actually they don't give a rip how you play the music.  If you go on TV there is a person who takes care of that stuff and payments are made.

If you come down to it any performance of copyrighted material for profit is a violation.  The only problem that the copyright holders have is collecting from you.  They do if you go on TV or radio even though you may be unaware of the payments.  They have to keep a play log with how many times a tune is aired for payments to ASCAP and others.

Again the problem of collecting is becoming easier in the electronic age when music transfers can be traced.  Even though they really can't now, believe me when they figure out how to collect they will.  

They are like the IRS they come into an area and make an example of someone so the rest fall in line.
