Is there another name for "methylated spirits" that we might use in
the States?

Larry Swain
In the UK, it is a mixture of 95 parts ethyl alcohol and 5 parts methy
alcohol plus a small amount of violet dye. The methyl alcohol (which is poisonous)
is added to prevent it being used to drink. In the USA it is generally referred
to as "Metho" and should be available at camping stores since it is use for
camp stoves. It is also sometimes called "denatured alcohol" though the
ingredients and their proportions can vary. Its also used as a paint thinner.
Whatever the exact mixture, it dissolves shellac, so be careful what type of records
you use it on!
