[Dixielandjazz] keeping track on measures in a song

I need help on how to keep track on time. When I began to improvise,
sometimes, I forgot in which measure we are. For instance a chorus may have
24 measures and the song 64. I may not know when to finish the chorus or the
song.
Is there a method to train our brain to keep track of the measures or count
them well?
