DEAR BOB & ALL:
YOU ARE CORRECT ABOUT THEY BOARD OF EQUALIZATION, THEY ARE INDEED BRUTAL,
HOWEVER it is not that bad, I have produced countless outdoor festivals and
events which involve 500 to 1000 + vendors selling merchandise. One person on
your staff or even one of your 4000 volunteers can set up all the arrangements
with the BofE. Every act or other vendor that intends to sell products to
the consumers at the Jubilee simply signs up for a sales permit in their own
name and fills out a one page form at the end of the event which they turn in to
the festival along with their check to Bof E for the sale tax on what they
sold. The Jubilee is ONLY responsible for paying sales tax on any product that
they actually sold. Don't sell any to collect a fee for it and you don't
owe any tax, simple as that, the idiot in the Bof E who told you differently
should be taken to task, as they are being lazy as usual and not doing their job
to come out and police the event and the vendors selling product.
There is no reason for the festival to be their collection agent, it's their
money let them bear the expense and labor to collect it and earn it.
Vendors fill out the damned forms in ten or fifteen minutes at many festivals all
over the state every weekend.
Cheers,
Tom Wiggins
