That very idea was used in the 1950's son the Steve Allen  (tv) Show in
Los Angeles.  Several people in the audience would each sing a note.  As
soon as either Steve (on piano), or someone in the band (Shelley Manne,
Frank Rossolino, the Conti brothers,etc.) got an idea from the notes,
the'd start playing it, and the band would join in.  Great fun!  I
remember one as being the Saints, which was picked up after 3 people
gave the pickup notes.......
