For non-UK readers, this station started out with all-jazz programming, got
into serious financial problems and now plays "jazz and jazz-related music".
Jazz-related seems to take in everything from muzak to rock & roll, and what
jazz does get played is usually pretty bland, to put it mildly. Traditional
scarcely gets a look-in. The presenters now are mainly "youth-orientated"
and don't know much about the subject. This has led to some great on-air
remarks such as the young woman who referred to the cornettist Big Spider
Beck, a young man who played Bix's 'Clarinet Marmalade' and remarked 'Great
clarinet there, Bix!', and my favourite, which was a record by the Oscar
Peterson trio: at the end of it the presenter, presumably reading from a
script prepared for him by the producer, said: "That was the Oscar Peterson
Trio, with Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums (puzzled pause) -
sorry, but it doesn't say who was on piano"

Ho hum.....

Mike D.
