One time in maybe the mid 70s, we advertised in our STJS (Sacramento
Traditional Jazz Society) newsletter that a band named "Gerber Road Dump"
would appear at our monthly Jazz Sunday (meeting). We kept it a big secret
& the people were going crazy to try to figure who the hell this band was.
We put a band together of guys who could play other instruments then what
the audience knew. Some of us weren't really proficient at the substitute
instruments but, we could play them to a degree.
I, for instance, used to play bass while going to highschool & did play it
on an album I recorded.
We all came out in white garbage men outfits carrying things like trash
containers, etc. We played a couple of tunes on the substitute instruments
& then switched to our regular axes & finished the set.
It was a great gag.
