Dear Jacques,
While agreeing with your comparison to Nelson-Straight's "Buddy's Habit(s)" you
will find that it was the other way around.
"Carolina Shout" was composed by James P Johnson well before 1926, as you infer.
There is an Artempo piano roll version (unpublished and uncopyrighted at the
time) issued in Feb 1918.
He did it again, as a piano roll, for QRS which was issued in May 1921. It was
copyrighted at this time.
Both rolls are labelled "as played by the composer".
The first recording of the tune was made by Jimmie Johnson's Jazz Boys in Oct
1921 for Arto.
On 18 Oct 1921 he recorded it as a piano solo for Okeh..
All versions are available on LP and CD, which I have.
