Hi Listmates!
Steve Barbone mentioned Vince Giardano's Nighthawks playing at the Cajun in New York. I had the pleasure of meeting Vince at the Hot Steamed Festival in Essex, CT last Saturday. Apparently, his gigs at the Cajun are Mondays and Thursdays 8pm - 11 pm.
Vince was playing drums behind Tony Pringle and a somewhat makeshift New Black Eagles with subs John Clark on reeds and Jerry Zigmont on T-bone adding an aura of youth to the venerable Pringle's front line. But smiling from behind was Vince Giardano, a handsome devilish smile it was, classily dressed, dark hair combed straight back with a part in the middle - someone, not anyone, out of the '20's for sure.
Vince noted that he is not a drummer although he certainly had me fooled. He also indicated how much he enjoyed playing with Tony Pringle - how Pringle builds tempo and dynamics to generate increasing excitement.
In all, I was only able to hear three sets, certainly enjoying the New Black Eagles, but also the Wolverine Jazz Band led by that same John Clark who sat in with Tony Pringle. Apparently, John has a recently earned PHD in Musicology and looks the youthful age that suggests. On the other hand his skills on the barry sax suggeest his virtuosity transcends his years.
