Looking at all the interesting stuff that's come in on the subject, I find
only one view to be distressing--the genial defeatism of Bill Gunther and a
couple of others who say categorically that the music will die after we do.
I can go along with Bill's claims that it will never be major-money popular
in the Britney Spears, Eminem, etc., category. Of course it won't. But to
give up, lie down and die is unwarranted.

Several listmates have written about practices and proposals for activism
that can bring a much stronger presence to OKOM in the media, at festivals,
and at the bar down the street. That would be real progress, and an
elevation of the quality of life at a time when, God knows, we need it.
