Krupa did a wonderful session with Wild Bill in 72. It was called Jazz at
the New School and is one of my all time favourite albums. Both Bill and
Gene are in sparkling form with Kenny Davern's soaring soprano sax (pity he
stopped playing it), Dick Wellstood's wonderful stride and the occasional
chord from Eddie Condon.
Best track for me though is Shimee Sha Wobble with just Davern, Wellstood
and Krupa. This just builds and builds. This is another example of what hot
jazz with attitude is all about. About a year later Krupa was dead.
There are some other marvellous sessions on the Condon Town Hall Concerts
where Gene plays solid traditional jazz drums. For my book he was the most
exciting of all the Chicago style drummers - and his solos always told a
story.
