Russ wrote the above in reference to a band backing someone like Tony
Bennet.
There IS, however, a big difference in the way a Dixieland band can
sound, though, depending on its members present. Each band has "its own
sound" based more on the actual players rather than the
music/arrangements being played.
We feel, in our band, that we can get away with one member of the rhythm
section being missing, but if two are substituted, then the sound is
changed. The front line is two horn only, so we are both quite
critical, but we have been known to blow as a quartet...due to illness,
etc.
No way we could sell the Canal Street as a separate entity with other
musicians. In particular, the pianist & myself having been together
since 1967 has a strong basis on the sound of the band.
Nevertheless, I hold nothing against someone that manages to pull of
that trick. Probably works better in the U.S. than it would in
Europe.....like franchising.....
