Dear Rebecca,
I think you will find that it was Oliver vs Duke Ellington over "Camp Meeting
Blues/Creole Love Call".
It seems that Oliver recorded and copyrighted "Temptation Blues" on 23 June
1923, but it was never issued by Okeh.
He re-recorded it for Columbia on 16 Oct 1923 as "Camp Meeting Meeting Blues"
which was released, but never altered or copyrighted it under the new name.
It seems that Rudy Jackson, who played with Oliver in 1924, remembered the theme
and probably passed it on to the Duke when he joined him in 1927.
"Creole Love Call" (Ellington-Miley-Jackson) recorded for Victor on 26 Oct 1927
is basically the same tune.
Oliver lost his claim against Victor/Ellington..
Kind regards,
Bill.
PS: Turk Murphy played (and recorded) Oliver's "Temptation Blues", which he took
from the 1923 copyrighted sheet.
I have a copy of this sheet, courtesy of DJML 'angel' Audrey Van Dyke.
