MIDI is an acronym for Musical Instrument Digital Interface - I won't go
into any technical explanations because I am not qualified to do so, it is
sufficient to say that a computer equipped with MIDI capability enables the
operator to play music on a large array of instruments. In my case I use
only the piano sound, but if I wished I could have my MIDI files played by a
huge virtual orchestra..
In the early days of MIDI these instruments were not real, but computer
generated approximations (some sounded just awful!). Nowadays samples are
taken from real instruments and give much more realistic results.
