Jim: Andore Bartha (his real Hungarian name) was a good friend. He =
played cornet and violin. Some nights after work we would head to the =
Key Motel where the musicians always stayed in Dayton and played string =
bass, violin and guitar on a wide range of tunes... things like Absinthe =
Frappe, etc. Great fun.
Chase had many odd habits but since I had known him for a long time I =
thought he would be able to cut that gig without problems. Wrong! =
Anyway, we got Brian and Hirsch too was on the gig. A fine pianist.
If you replaced Hubble with the Dukes in Cincinnati, I know the whole =
story. Ed was staying with me at the time as I was living in Cincinnati =
at the time.
I knew you, but it was Clancy who recommended Shanley and Hirsch as they =
were in a band he fronted in Chicago after leaving Scobey.=20
Andy and Clancy were after hour cohorts in Las Vegas when both Pee Wee =
Hunt's and Scobey's bands were working there.
P.S. Working tomorrow with Ray and Duke Heitger and others including =
John Ulrich in Columbus at a Central Ohio Jazz Club concert. Looking =
forward to it.
Always good to hear from you.

I had Brian in my band some years ago. In the 60's, I believe. I had =
brought Clancy Hayes in to Dayton for what ended up as an 10-12 week =
gig.=20
It was my band but, by agreement, Clancy's name hung on the marque.
We opened with Frank Chace of clary and Beebe on trombone but after =
a short period (a matter of days) Clancy and Chace had gotten into a =
fistfight in their motel and Clancy clobbered Chace's nose. Chase left =
and I brought in Brian and his albert system clary. He played very well. =
Replace Beebe with Ed Hubble.
Sorry to hear about Vrian . I have often wondered
what happened to him. Losing a lot of friends recently.
Thanks for the posting, or I may never had known.

Thanks for the recall, Gene. Wasn't Andy Bartha on that gig. Bob =
Hirsch on piano? I had forgotten about the fight with Clancy and Frank =
chase. I remember that my wife got sick as usual and I had to go back =
home.
Andy Bartha had recently come off a long stint with Pee Wee hunt =
and he was paranoid about it. He thought that the musicians were making =
fun of him because he had been with Hunt. Which was absurd. One night =
for some reason we played the 12 St Rag. Frank Chase went into that =
classic cornball clarinet chorus from Pee Wee Hun't hit record. Andy =
Bartha totally freaked out as he thought that Chase was doing this as a =
deliberate taunt. =20
It's interesting that eddie Hubble replaced me as I replaced him once =
with the Dukes. Frank Assunto called me at home once in a panic. He =
said "Eddie Hubble has been naking negative remarks about me and the =
band on the stand during the gig and I finally hauled off and slugged =
him...right on the stand." He begged me to come and I did.
