Dear Listers:

Jim Denham remarked: "By the way, I've nothing against a good banjo in a =
band. It's just that, in my experience, there aren't that many of them. =
Two good ones that spring to mind are a (to me) local lad, Brian Mellor =
and listmate Louis Lince."

Clearly, it helps to be in the right place at the right time. I have =
often remarked that I have played with more top banjo players than top =
folks on any other instrument, including Bob Leary, Doug Mattocks, Steve =
DiBonaventura and Buddy Wachter. I have played with many more who were =
perhaps a step away from that distinguished quartet. It has been a real =
treat.

I also agree with the sentiment that a good guitarist is preferable to a =
bad banjoist, and vice versa. Bob Leary plays both instruments with =
elan, and he is welcome to pull whatever out of its case. I have played =
some very enjoyable gigs on tuba with good guitarists.

Regards,
Dave Stoddard
Round Rock, TX
