Dear Rebecca and Jack,
I was going to keep out of the "Shirt Tail Stomp' thread, as everyone seemed to
be doin' all right.
However, what has not been mentioned is that there are TWO versions of "Shirt
Tail Stomp".
The one under discussion was recorded by Ben's Bad Boys (Ben Pollack) for Victor
on 22 Jan 1929 with Jimmy McPartland, c; Glenn Miller, tb (not Teagarden as once
listed); BG, cl; Vic Breidis, p; Dick Morgan, g; Harry Goodman, tu, Ray Bauduc,
d. This version was not issued at the time and did not appear until a Camden
(RCA) LP in the ?1960s (which I still have).
It seems to have been a 'cover' of the original "Shirt Tail Stomp" recorded for
Brunswick on 4 June 1928 at the 2nd record date under BG's name. The same
Pollack crew as above, except Bob Conselman is the dmmer and Fud Livingston,
cl/alto was added. Also included on this one side from the 4 tune session is
Tommy Dorsey, tb. He had just finished recording at Okeh with the Dorsey
Brothers' orch and called into Brunswick in time to join the band gagging about
on the chords of "St Louis Blues" (yes, and BG took composer credit!). The
record contractor was so impressed that he got them to stay around until after
the next group (the Hapani Trio) had finished so that it could be recorded. The
recording sheets show that 2 masters were cut and that it was to be called
"Bundle of Blues".
This 'dixieland' spoof on the Original Dixieland Jazz Band was then issued on a
Brunwick 78. So much for the history of OKOM!
I have always assumed this Brunswick side to be the inspiration for the
inclusion of ODJB's "Sensation Rag" in the 'history of jazz' segment at the
famous Goodman band (16 Jan 1938) Carnegie Hall Concert, but no writers (that I
know of) seem to have made this connection. Remember, the "Shirt Tail Stomp"
record was only 10 years old at the time.
This first rendition of "Shirt Tail Stomp" can be found on Brunswick, Vocalion,
MCA, Sunbeam and Affinity LPs. It is/was on Classics CD 693.
As usual, much more than you wanted to know, but then is IS Christmas day.
Kind regards,
Bill.
