Stan, et al: Jim Synder's death.
This is a terrible loss. Jim was a wonderful player and his trombone will be
sorely missed by all who knew and played with him. I never had that honor,
though I got to know him when playing on alternate sets at several festivals
with other bands.
Knew that his health situation was becoming serious when I had to sub on
trombone with the (Chicago) Salty Dogs at a Michigan
date when Tommy Bartlett had to go to the coast to sub in turn for Jim who
was ill. Since then I have gotten reports from others that his situation was
not getting better, and now this sad news. Those who had the good fortune to
hear Jim in person know just how a big a loss this is.
The kind act of Mike Walbridge in sitting with and comforting Jim is typical
of Mike, who is one of the more compassionate players I have had the good
fortune to call a friend. Mike has had recent tragic times himself but his
bedside hospice is not surprising. Jim had good friends everywhere, and we
all will carry a share of the grief such a loss evokes.
God bless and welcome you Jim. And let's thank Him for giving us your music
and friendship while you were with us.
