[Dixielandjazz] gigs

A gym with 3,000 dancers - boggles the mind.  How were the acoustics?

I read somewhere once that big bands had their origins in the need for 
enough sound to fill the huge ballrooms of the 1930's.  Then when 
amplification became possible, the need for large groups died down.
