RobertCalder,

Your emailentitled “Grandparents in the Swing Era?” prompted numerous responses and follow-ups.I note you have responded to other points on the mailing list but have yet torespond to my questions of you regarding that posting.

Quotingyour previous statements,

“Grandparents thesedays might in Britain be like some Americans in thinking Kenny Ball a bettermusician than he was, but if you were born sixty years ago Kenny Ball's heydayas a pop star would already have begun receding.”

What is your measuringstick for determining the quality of a musician?

I amguessing from the balance of that email that you are complaining about peoplepresenting or identifying something as trad jazz, when it is not. Assuming I amcorrect, how do you define trad jazz? What are the elements of a performancethat makes it “tourist schmaltz”? Why do you think some musicians were/areplaying the “tourist schmaltz”?

It appears that you are criticizing Harry James for comfortablyswimming in a similar schmaltz. Assuming I am correct, why do you think HarryJames et al went in this direction?
