Archeophone records has released an album collecting Gus Haenschen's
personal recordings from 1916 and they are calling them the real first
jazz on record.

The February Syncopated Times has two essays defending the claim. One
is from Colin Hancock who was involved with the release (and I believe
writes the liner notes.) The other is from David Sager who works with
the Library of Congress National Jukebox project which digitizes
acoustic era recordings.

If you aren't familiar with Colin yet you should be, he's a super
exciting young musician. Among other things he multi tracks recordings
of himself playing every instrument on 20s jazz tunes. The results are
hard to believe.

These just came out this winter but he has hundreds of them.
