Summer's over, the kids are back in school, the weather is cooling and the leaves are turning! It was a busy summer for SacJEF - our 34th annual Trad Jazz Camp was another success, thanks to the faculty, counselors and volunteers who put in so much time and effort to make it an outstanding summer music camp experience for the nearly 190 students who attended. We want to especially thank those folks who sponsored kids to camp by donating part or all of their tuition. Between SacJEF, individual sponsors, and other Jazz Societies nearly half the campers attended on partial or full scholarships, a new record!
In August, a handful of SacJEF volunteers participated in Race for the Arts at William Land Park. It was a beautiful morning, we walked and Dave Becker manned our information booth. TNT performed as part of the program. We had fun and made some new friends in the community!
Speaking of TNT, the 2019-20 version of this 30-year program has started rehearsals. We are pleased to announce this year's band members: Grace Eastlick, trumpet; Catherine Treadwell, clarinet; Eli Bevan, trombone; Nora Severeid, bass; Lili Valencich, piano; Joseph Bly, drums; and Leila Brannan, vocals.

It's the beginning of another school year, which means the launch of the 2019-20 SacJEF Music Lessons Awards. Instrument Match Needs You!
Help!! The SacJEF is in need of more donated instruments! We sent out a notice to local schools looking for students who need an instrument but can't afford to purchase or rent one, and the response was so overwhelming our inventory has been drastically reduced! Do you have an instrument collecting dust in a closet or attic? Are you a musician who doesn't play any more? Please consider donating to our Instrument Match program. It's easy! Just visit https://www.sacjef.org/instrument-match/ and click on Instrument Donation. Fill out the form and we will get back to you. Donations are fully tax-deductible.
Do you know of a student who needs an instrument of their own? If so, direct them to the above link and have them apply. Since this program began we have matched dozens of donated and refurbished instruments with deserving young musicians.
Donor Profile - Laura Lee Humes
Laura Lee was one of the very first individuals to support the Foundation's youth programs by establishing an endowment fund in 2001 in memory of her late father, saxophonist Kenton O. Smith. Each year since, the SacJEF has awarded cash scholarships to deserving college students, drawing on this fund and on additional donations made by Laura Lee. A native of Orange, CA, Laura Lee moved with her family to Coronado as a young child, where her father had a day job with Rohr Aircraft. Laura Lee remembers playing in and around the hallways of the Hotel Coronado, and was there when "Some Like It Hot" was filmed.
Laura Lee is also an accomplished, award-winning photographer, whose photos have been displayed in southern California and elsewhere. Below is a photo of her with her work at the Ouray County, Colorado Art Association reception.
Thank you, Laura Lee!
An Interview with Wycliffe Gordon
At the annual Jazz Education Network (JEN) conference in Reno this past January, famed trombonist Wycliffe Gordon joined the Teagarden Jazz Festival Clinicians band in a well-received performance of early jazz. After the performance, Bill Dendle interviewed Wycliffe, and queried him on his early training in traditional jazz. His answers speak to our mission of preserving this early music and its importance as a foundation for more modern jazz studies. You can see the full interview plus lots of other good stuff at the brand new You Tube channel for the TJF https://www.youtube.com/user/tjybf2014?reload=9
In Memoriam - Mary Jane Richardson
The jazz community lost a long-time friend this year. Mary Jane Richardson was a frequent donor to many SacJEF causes, including the Teagarden Jazz Camp and Youth Band festivals, as well as many fundraising activities. A native of Utah, Mary Jane moved to the Sacramento area in 1983, and quickly became involved with the local jazz scene. She loved a good party, and rarely missed a jazz festival or fundraising event. We will join her many friends in celebrating her life at Straw Hat Pizza on Mather Field Rd, Wednesday, November 13th. SacJEF Wins 'Best Non-Profit' Award!!
SacJEF was honored recently at the third annual Best of Arden Awards presented by the Greater Arden Chamber of Commerce. Thanks to all of you who voted for us! Thanks to you, we won the Best Non-Profit Award. Several Board members were on hand to enjoy the dinner and receive the award, but the highlight of the evening was the performance by our very own TNT band. The band was very well received, and, as usual, made us proud!
TNT, the SacJEF sponsored youth trad band, is now in its 30th year!! It isn't too late to get your very own TNT CD! Order online today!
