[Dixielandjazz] Sensible Set List

I rarely used to do a set list, going into a gig with only the first 3 tunes chosen & in my head.  Then, as we played, I would choose the next song.  I liked choosing tunes to fit the particular audience.  However, eventually I found I wasn't remembering to play some tunes, so have taken to preparing a set list.  Also, our long running (38 yrs!) trumpeter passed away, and we now use mainly one guy, but have to rely on 2 subs for him as he is not always available.  So, I need to let the trumpeters know what we are aiming to do.  That doesn't mean, however, that I won't vary the list for a request or if I see the audience would react better to something I didn't have planned.

As someone else suggested, I try to slot in between 32 bar songs, tunes that have a different structure, or add in an Ellington type song (for example)that has a different rhythm.  The idea is to mix it all up so a set is interesting.
