[Dixielandjazz] question about reeds

I hope some of the clarinet playing elders on the list will be able to help me here. I'm writing a bio of my late brother, Don Suhor, and recall how he went through a time of "reed madness" in the 1950s—was never satisfied within the sound he was getting as he tried reed after reed. I'm told this is a fairly common obsession among young players. I remember Don using Rico Reeds but also seniding away for another brand that I recall, maybe wrongly, as T. J. Mercado Reeds. Does that name, or anything like it, ring a bell? I Googled it without results. Can you name other brands of reeds that were popular back then?
